As the title suggests, Jon Kabat-Zinn’s Mindfulness for beginners is a great introduction to the subject and practice of mindfulness. The book comes with an audio CD that includes short meditations that are wonderful for reducing general stress and are a great start to the very intricate study of meditation. Kabat-Zinn has a light tone, which helps a beginner to stay engaged in the book and each chapter is very short, designed specifically so that you can read just a page or two, learn about an aspect of Mindfulness, and then put it down again without being overwhelmed. Kabat-Zinn introduces difficult concepts throughout the book like non-striving and non-judging, but reminds the reader not to get down if they can’t master the practice of such concepts in the short term. Mindfulness is a life-long study that is as much and more about the journey as it is about the end result. I would certainly recommend this book to anyone interested in an introduction to mindfulness and meditation.
